Birdwatcher's Paradise: Avian Wonders Around Digantaa Resort

330+ species recorded in Kumaon. A guide to the birds of Dhanachuli — and why dawn at Digantaa is unlike anywhere else.

Long before the first guest stirs, the hillside around Digantaa is already awake. Whistles, chatters and trills drift up from the oak and rhododendron forest, and anyone who steps onto a balcony with a cup of tea becomes, for a few minutes at least, a birdwatcher. With more than 330 species recorded across Kumaon, bird watching in Mukteshwar is one of the quiet joys of a mountain stay.

Our cottages are named after these birds

It is no accident that every cottage typology at Digantaa carries the name of a Himalayan bird. Each one is a resident or visitor you may spot from the estate:

  • Tesia — tiny, almost tail-less, and more often heard than seen, flitting through dense undergrowth.
  • Yuhina — small crested birds that move through the canopy in busy, chattering flocks.
  • Myna — confident, familiar and endlessly talkative.
  • Magpie — the red-billed blue magpie, with its long, elegant tail streaming between the trees.

Chanfi: a silent valley for birders

For a dedicated morning of birding, we recommend Chanfi, a quiet forested valley about 30 minutes from the resort. Away from the road and the town, the valley is calm enough to hear every call. Go early, walk slowly and let the birds come to you. Our team can arrange the drive and a guided walk.

When to go bird watching in Mukteshwar

Dawn is the golden hour for birds in the hills — activity peaks in the first two hours after sunrise and again in the late afternoon. Spring brings breeding plumage and the most song; the clear days of autumn and winter offer long views and easier spotting as the foliage thins.

What to bring

  • A pair of binoculars and a field guide (or a birding app) for the Indian Himalayas.
  • Muted, comfortable clothing and shoes with good grip for forest trails.
  • Patience — the best sightings come to those who stand still.

Whether you are a serious lister or simply enjoy a beautiful morning, the birds of Kumaon will make your stay memorable. See all our experiences, or explore Mukteshwar for more places to visit.
